Breakthrough Breast Cancer
Breakthrough Breast Cancer is the UK's leading charity committed to fighting breast cancer through research, campaigning and education, spending around £12 million on dedicated breast cancer research projects each year.
Breakthrough's research aims to improve our fundamental knowledge of breast biology and the genes involved in breast cancer, and to translate these findings rapidly into benefits for breast cancer patients. In addition to funding high quality research, Breakthrough promotes breast cancer education and awareness, and campaigns for improvements in breast cancer services and treatments.
In 1999, Breakthrough opened the UK’s first dedicated breast cancer research centre, The Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre, based in the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Building at The Institute of Cancer Research. Under the directorship of Professor Alan Ashworth, scientists and clinicians are working on a programme of cutting-edge biological research to discover the causes of breast cancer, find methods of prevention, and develop new treatments and more effective methods of diagnosis. In 2008, Breakthrough established a network of Research Units in Edinburgh, King’s College London and Manchester.
